Who Are Ya!: Chicago Nation FC (UPSL)

October 26, 2026 by Joshua Duder

Chicago Nation FC, who operate in the UPSL, love competing at the highest level they can and annually test themselves in USOC qualifying. Owner Garrett Hayward gives us the rundown on operations and aspirations.

Tell us the origin story of Chicago Nation FC - when was it founded? By whom and what is its mission?
Chicago Nation FC was founded in 2020 by Garrett Hayward.  The mission was to bring a higher platform to the Chicagoland market by introducing the UPSL Premier League to the Midwest. This platform helps create opportunities for players to be recognized at a National level and open paths to continue playing at a high level / be recruited by professional teams and colleges.

Tell us about your badge and colors – how does it connect to the community?
The Badge and colors represents the USA and Chicago and all players from different cultural backgrounds coming together in unity. Nation is a name we wanted to be for everyone from players, coaches and fans of the game.

What league or leagues does your club participate in and why did you choose those to join?
Our team competes in the United Premier Soccer League and the Lamar Hunt Open Cup competition. This league and tournament give maximum exposure and quality competition.

How does the club cover its costs, and how can people support you?
Self funded by owner Garrett Hayward. We run supplemental trainings, help in field rental and rely on donations to our Non-profit 501c3.

How did you finish last year and what are your goals for next season?
9-0-1 and lost in the Midwest Central Championship. Winning this would've put us into the National round of 32.

How does Chicago Nation FC participate in or give back to their community?
Home games are open to the public and we invite local youth clubs to attend where they can experience a high quality game and interact with the players.

If there were one or two teams, within a 100 miles of you, to play a friendly against – who would you play and why?
We have played the Chicago Fire II multiple times. Playing any professional teams is always our goal to see where we stand against the top programs.
