Roll Fog: Independent Soccer Meets Independent Filmmaking

October 22, 2026 by Joshua Duder

Upcoming documentary about the oldest supporter-owned soccer team in the US, San Francisco City FC, and their displacement from Kezar Stadium

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - On Tuesday night I had the pleasure of joining a limited zoom screening of 40 minutes of film from the upcoming documentary, Roll Fog. San Francisco-based filmmaker Daniel Díaz said that a large portion of what we saw was realistically not going to make the cut, but that he had hours and hours of film which his team was going through and they still needed our help to get the project completed.

Normally, we at Protagonist don’t like cutting and pasting directly from a media release kit, but due to the nature of this project, our intense interest in its success, and not wanting to misspeak for everyone who has invested in the film, we are going to simply use their words from this point on.

Roll Fog starts at the historic Kezar Stadium, home of San Francisco City FC (SF City FC), the oldest community-owned fútbol club in the US. The sudden announcement of a new copycat club co-founded by finance executives and supported by Mayor Daniel Lurie threatens to displace SF City FC, mirroring decades of gentrification faced by the city’s working class. A season of uncertainty and resistance off the pitch coincided with unprecedented success on it as SF City FC won the division title and qualified for the playoffs for the first time in the team’s history.

The film is currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter where backers can support the film’s completion. Rewards available to supporters include a season special edition SF City FC x Roll Fog jersey produced by Meyba that the team will be wearing during the 2027 season.

Roll Fog recently completed production and will be in post-production until Fall 2027. The team anticipates premiering the film in early 2028.
