Kezar Stadium: Playoffs Host
Historic Kezar Stadium, which celebrated its 101st Birthday in May, has been witness to thousands of soccer games in its time. This weekend, two of its longest running residents will host their respective playoff games, from their respective leagues.
Situated east to west between Kezar Drive and Frederick Street, Kezar Stadium was finished in 1925; demolished and rebuilt in 1989 to 90; and renovated when the SF Deltas arrived in 2015. It has been a community living room for the city; serving as a concert venue, a home-coming gathering spot, a political rally site, home to parades and ethnic festivals.
Kezar has also been the home for NFL Football, as well as every attempt to launch a mid to high level soccer team in San Francisco. From Golden Gate Gales, Bay Area Breeze, SF Bay Seals, California Victory, SF Stompers, and aforementioned Deltas to SF Nighthawks, SF City FC and El Farolito FC.
It was announced last year, during the stadium’s centenary, that a deal had been struck with investors representing Major League Soccer, and that they were going to pour funding into the site once again, but the cost was that these historic tenants would have little to no access to their home field. Instead, a brand new team nobody asked for would take their place and play in a developmental league which nobody attends or watches.
It’s been over a year since the announcement and it’s been very quiet on that front. However, a few of our favorite clubs have played games at Kezar Stadium this year and two of them are hosting respective playoff games over the weekend. SF City FC play FC Tucson tonight and El Farolito FC host Duluth FC on Saturday.
El Farolito FC, founded in 1985 and winners of the 1993 US Open Cup, have been absolutely untouchable in NPSL play for the last 5 years. Winners of the Golden Gate Conference 4 of those last 5 seasons, they have not lost a league fixture since 2022.
Unfortunately, El Farolito were knocked out of the USOC in round one, away to Sacramento Republic. But have been lights out since then. Unbeaten in NPSL regular season play, they host Duluth FC in a playoff rematch from two seasons ago.
While they were not allowed to play all home matches at Kezar, El Farolito finished the season strongly there and Dembor Benson, 2nd in the NPSL Golden Boot Race with 15 goals, looks to run riot on Saturday.
Duluth FC are not to be taken lightly. They joined NPSL in 2017 and have either won or finished second in the North Conference for the last 6 years.
They ended the season 6-3-1 with 26 goals scored and 9 against, for a +17 GD. Joao Magaihaes, 3rd in NPSL’s Golden Boot race has 13 goals and the other danger man is Seth Davidson, who has credit for 2 assists.
SF City FC have just completed the best regular season since adding a “first team” squad in 2015. Founded in 2001, SFCFC notably have multiple 1st place finishes in the SFSFL, but have only once qualified for playoffs outside of the historic city league.
In 2026, City went 12/1/1 earning a 2.64 ppg and won the NorCal Division for the first time. “The Great” Dane Pendleton was a massive part of their success, pouring in 15 goals, which has him tied for 2nd in the USLL2 Golden Boot race. The whole squad has hit for 46 goals, allowed 17, and finished the season with a +26 GD. Sergio Laguna is credited with 4 assists, Kiichi Murakami 4, and Kai Oppenheim 3.
Importantly, much like El Farolito, SF City FC were forced to split their home games between Cox Stadium, El Camino HS, and finally Kezar Stadium - they had 7 clean sheets all year and Mathew Guerra made 15 saves.
They host FC Tucson tonight at Kezar.
Former USL League One club, FC Tuscon, are a well-tuned and very prepared opponent. They come to San Francisco with 6w/2L/4d - 1.83 ppg. The finished 2nd in the Southwest Division, behind former USLL2 champions Ventura County Fusion.
FC Tucson are on a three match run, having lost to that Fusion team prior to that. They’re led by Tyler Ware with 5 goals & 1 assist. Three other players have 2 goals, and 7 more have 1 each. Matheus Rhormens has 19 saves this year.
The winner of SF City FC vs FC Tuscon plays the winner of Project 51O vs Ventura County Fusion on Sunday, also at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco.
