Every week we’re looking for clubs at every level and league of soccer in the US and this week we present The Mad Dog Lassies. Emma Maloney responded to our inquiry and gave us all the answers about the club plying their trade in the Golden Gate Women’s Soccer League!

Tell us the origin story of The Mad Dog Lassies - when was it founded? By whom and what is its mission?
Founded in 1998, the Mad Dog Lassies began their journey in the fifth division of the Golden Gate Women's Soccer League (GGWSL). Over the years, the team steadily climbed through every division on its way to the Premier Division. The Lassies have remained a Premier Division mainstay for more than a decade, earning a reputation as a competitive and respected force in San Francisco women's soccer.

While we're always playing to win, the Mad Dog Lassies are just as passionate about building community. Many of our players compete together in coed leagues throughout the week, and Saturdays are reserved for GGWSL full-field matches. Win or lose, you'll often find us gathering after games at our sponsors, Zeitgeist in the Mission and Mad Dog in the Fog in the Upper Haight.

Tell us about your badge and colors – how does it connect to the community?
Our club badge proudly features the Golden Gate Bridge, representing the city we call home and the soccer community we've helped build for nearly three decades. Our partnerships with local neighborhood bars have also helped create a unique connection between women's soccer and establishments that have traditionally been male-dominated spaces.

How does the club cover its costs, and how can people support you?
While we receive valued support from our sponsors, the majority of team expenses are covered by the players themselves. We invest in this club because we believe in it, in each other, and in the community we've built together. Of course, we're always grateful for additional support that can help fund new kits, equipment, and other team needs.

How did you finish last year and what are your goals for next season?
Last season presented challenges, including difficult scheduling and too many games played with little or no bench depth. But adversity has only strengthened our resolve. As former league champions, we know what it takes to compete at the highest level, and this season we're ready to recommit, reload, and chase another Premier Division title.

How does Mad Dog participate in or give back to their community?
Beyond the field, the Mad Dog Lassies are deeply invested in the local soccer community. Our players coach youth teams, support local school programs, mentor young athletes, and help grow the game throughout San Francisco.

For us, soccer is about more than results. It's about competition, friendship, community, and creating a place where women can continue to play the sport they love at a high level for years to come. The Mad Dog Lassies have been doing exactly that since 1998, and we're just getting started.
