Who Are Ya!: Portland Bangers FC

July 27, 2026 by Joshua Duder

“Keep Portland Weird” but also competitive! For over half the season, Portland Bangers were holding down first place in the very tough USL League Two’s Northwest Division. While they barely missed out on playoffs, it was a fun ride with Saucy and company. We wanted to know how it all got started and Bangers were happy to get us up to date.

Tell us the origin story of Portland Bangers FC - when was it founded? By whom and what is its mission?
Portland Bangers FC was founded in 2024 by the team behind the Portland Pickles with a simple idea: create a soccer club that feels unmistakably Portland.

The goal wasn't just to put another team on the field. It was to build a club that embraced the city's creativity, humor, and independent spirit while making high-level soccer accessible to everyone. From day one, the Bangers have been focused on creating an experience that blends sport, culture, art, music, and community into something uniquely Portland.

Having just completed our second season, the club continues to grow as a home for supporters who love great soccer but also appreciate a little chaos, personality, and fun along the way.

Tell us about your badge and colors – how does it connect to the community?
The Bangers brand was designed to stand out from traditional soccer culture. Our badge and colors reflect the energy, creativity, and irreverence that define Portland itself.

The identity is bold, playful, and a little unconventional—much like the city we represent. While we're still early in our journey, the core of the brand has remained consistent: be loud, be local, and never take yourself too seriously.

Of course, no discussion of our identity is complete without Saucy. More than a mascot, Saucy has become a symbol of the club's willingness to take risks, have fun, and engage supporters in ways that most teams never would.

What league or leagues does your club participate in and why did you choose those to join?
Portland Bangers FC competes in USL League Two, one of the premier pre-professional leagues in North America.

USL League Two provides a high level of competition while helping develop the next generation of players. It offers a strong pathway for collegiate and aspiring professional athletes while allowing clubs to build deep roots within their local communities.

The league was a natural fit for the Bangers because it combines elite competition with community-driven growth, which aligns perfectly with our vision for the club.

How does the club stay funded and how can our readers support you?
Like many independent clubs, we rely on a combination of ticket sales, merchandise, sponsorships, and community partnerships to operate.

The biggest thing supporters can do is show up. Attend matches, bring friends, buy merch, engage with our content, and help spread the word. Every supporter contributes to building a sustainable club and strengthening the soccer culture we're creating in Portland.

Whether you're in the stands every match or wearing Bangers gear around town, you're helping grow the movement.

How did you finish last year and what are your goals for the 2026 season?
Our inaugural season exceeded expectations and helped establish the Bangers as one of the most exciting new clubs in the country. The support from the community was incredible, and the club quickly built a reputation for creating a unique matchday atmosphere.

Heading into our second season, expectations are even higher. We're proud to be ranked among the top 10 teams in the nation, and we're excited to open a new chapter by moving into Lents Park as our permanent home.

On the field, the goal is simple: compete for championships and continue proving that Portland belongs among the best clubs in USL League Two.

Off the field, we want to keep growing our supporter culture, expanding our reach throughout the city, and creating experiences that people can't find anywhere else.

How does Bangers FC participate in or give back to their community?
Community is at the center of everything we do. The Bangers collaborate with local artists, musicians, businesses, nonprofits, and community organizations to create opportunities that extend far beyond the soccer field.

Whether it's highlighting local creatives, supporting neighborhood initiatives, providing affordable family entertainment, or creating spaces where people feel welcome and connected, our goal is to be an active participant in the communities we serve.

We're not just representing Portland—we're celebrating it.

If there were one or two teams, within a 100 miles of you, to play a friendly against – who would you play and why?
We'd love to see a friendly against the Portland Timbers U23s or a regional all-star side featuring top talent from across Oregon and Southwest Washington.

Any match that brings together supporters from across the region and showcases the incredible soccer talent in the Pacific Northwest would be a win.

That said, if Saucy got to choose, he'd probably challenge anyone willing to show up and risk becoming part of the mayhem.
