Who Are Ya!: Spam FC (Minnesota Amateur Soccer League)
What is the origin story for Spam FC - who founded the club and why?
The history of SPAM FC dates back to 1998, as one of the most successful youth teams in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. Today's men’s league club was founded in 2011 by a mix of college players, and young professionals that wanted to pay tribute to its community and create an environment for young players to grow while competing at the highest level.
Tell us about your badge and colors – has it evolved over time or always been the same?
As a club based out of St. Louis Park, Minnesota and we continue to call the city high school stadium "Home" and we have taken on the cities Oriole mascot and orange and black colors. Our badge is an in-motion Oriole guiding a soccer ball. It represents our high pressing mentality and attacking style of play.
With so many league options nowadays, what league do you play in and why did you pick that one?
SPAM FC participates in the Minnesota Amateur Soccer League. At the time of creation this was the most competitive league Minnesota had to offer so it was natural to join and work our way up from Division 4 to Division 1. We now have two teams competing at the Division 1 and 2 levels.
Many clubs choose to sell hats, scarves or replica kits - how does your club keep the lights on and cover its league costs?
We have an amazing partnership with La Dona Cerveceria brewery that helps support us, but as an amateur club the team is mostly supported by its managers and players. We do love building relationships and community and are always interested in new opportunities for sponsorship. Otherwise, donating to our nonprofit is an amazing way to get involved and any help or support goes a long way into the club and community.
How did you finish last year? What are the goals for this season?
In a nail-biting season that came down to the last game of the year, we finished 2nd this summer in MASL Division 1. Our 9-game win streak ended on the last game of the season against the league champions. Overall, it was a very successful 13-4-1 season with a club record 67 goals scored and a plus 41 goal differential. After winning the league in 2024, we were invited to play in the Minnesota Super Cup, losing our first game against UPSL side 18x26 Academy, and tying former USL 2 champion Thunder Bay Academy.
Our division 2 team had a challenging but fun season and is looking forward to running it back next year. Next season’s goals are the same as every year and that is to compete for the league title and have fun playing the game we love along the way.

The club founders also started a soccer driven educational charity called, "Spam FC Scholarship Foundation." The purpose of the charity is to raise and distribute money to help students who have been impacted by soccer in a positive way pay for post-secondary education via scholarships. We do this by hosting tournaments, runs for funds and our annual SPAM FC dinner gala. We Participate in various educational seminars for young students to educate on opportunities and do table and connects at events like MNUFC games to connect and educate on our mission. In the last 11 years the foundation has distributed over $200,000 and supported 155 students, helped build a soccer field in a rural area in Haiti, and help other soccer organizations that do incredible things in surrounding communities. More on our nonprofit and ways to support can be found on spamfc.com.
What games or teams do you look forward to playing the most?
We have had many exciting matches and rivalries against local teams at various levels of amateur and semi pro soccer. We always look forward to stepping on the field and competing. Those local competitions are what we look forward to the most.
