W League 3 + 1

With the big amateur leagues back in the swing of things, we’re bringing back our 3+1 series. Each week we’ll recap 3 of the best matches from the previous week, then preview 1 of the upcoming week’s matches. Hence the name, 3+1 (granted, this week in the W-League, we only had two matches). Here’s this week’s edition.

Recap

Academica 1 - 2 Olympic Club

Opening match of the season and a big one for two of the challengers in the Nor Cal Division. With the top of the table packed with talented rosters and big name clubs, every match matters and Olympic got the win on the road in a battle between two California legacy organizations. Olivia Perrin would get the scoring going early in the first half, putting Academica in the driver’s seat. But Olympic’s Stephanie Pawek would equalize before the half, leaving all to play for in the second. The winner would come early in the second half when Melissa Wilson, who played her college ball for the Southern Utah Thunderbirds, scored for Olympic. The win gives Olympic a big boost in a crowded Nor Cal Division, getting out of the gate with 3 points. Olympic Club will go on the road to Oakland Soul this weekend.

Stockton Cargo 0 - 0 Oakland Soul

Has to be disappointing for both of these sides to exit this match with a single point to show for all the hard work. Playing in one of the most competitive divisions of the W League will mean that draws (even worse a loss) could mean the difference between playoffs or going home early from the party. So both sides leave this match without a win and a bitter aftertaste they will hope to wash out of their mouths with their next match. Oakland will host 1-0 Olympic Club, while Stockton will go on the road to take on Academica.

Richmond Ivy SC vs Virginia Marauders FC

MidAtlantic opener with the brand new Richmond Ivy hosting Virginia at City Stadium in Richmond. So much to love about this matchup. Hopefully Richmond will show up to support their new women’s side and make home field a true advantage. For Virginia’s part, they are looking to kick off the season with a better run than their 3-win last season. Should be a good one!
