USL Super League Offseason One
The first season of the USL Super League proved to be a rousing success. Fans were made, matches were played, and an exciting season went off without a hitch. As the first offseason is now rolling, we get to see a whole new side of the league as teams try to fix gaps and come back strong next season. It’s the first offseason for the young league and there’s plenty happening already! Let’s dive into what we know about each team’s moves so far.
The roster pages on every team’s websites are changing rapidly and by the day. Just this morning, I opened an email from Lexington SC announcing 15 players being cut from the roster, including Super Show favorite Madi Parsons. According to the team website, that leaves 10 players on the roster. UPDATE: This morning at 7amMT, the team sent out an email listing 8 players returning. Maithé López and Sarah Cox are still listed on the website, but were not on the list sent out this morning by the club. We’ve emailed the team for an update on their status. It should be noted that Lexington did mention that both Parsons and Courtney Jones were invited to preseason camp (presumably to try out for a roster spot?).
A club forever in flux in year one, DC Power is desperate to find itself and a way up the table after finishing 7th in the standings. The club’s website lists 14 players rostered currently, including their stellar goalkeeper, Morgan Aquino. Last week, the club announced the signing of University of Virginia and U.S. Youth National team midfielder Alexis Theore, so that’s exciting. Phil Nana is still listed as interim, but given how the team finished the season so strong, it would be nice to see his hard work pay off with a more official position.
Brooklyn FC also got into the roster shake-up game last week, announcing the cutting of 13 players from the roster. The website lists 11 players still on the roster, including key-contributor Mackenzie George. Notably, the website does not list any goalkeepers currently on the roster. The team still needs a head coach and there’s plenty of questions about next season remaining.

Spokane Zephyr do not appear to have updated their online roster, so there’s plenty of questions regarding who’s returning and who’s not. We do know that head coach Jo Johnson is out and Josh McAllister, who was already on staff with Spokane, has been appointed as the Interim Head Coach. The future of USL Super League Player of the Year, Emina Ekić and USL Goalkeeper of the Year Hope Hisey is still unknown at this point. I have heard from a source that one of the key parts of Spokane’s attack, McKenzie Weinert, has departed for Lexington. Spokane made a “Thank You” Instagram post for both Weinert and Sydney Cummings, so it’s safe to assume both are headed elsewhere.
Carolina Ascent, who won the regular season title, but exited in the semifinals of the playoffs, announced eight players leaving the team. As far as I can tell, Coach of the Year Philip Poole will be back next season. After his team’s exit from the playoffs, he included the statement “I can’t wait to get going again” in his statement to the press. The roster page includes 15 players, including superstar goalkeeper Meagan McClelland and USYNT call-up Charlotte Burge. Shout out to defender Vicky Bruce who is vacationing in Morocco with family (her social media posts have been enjoyable), seems like she’s having a nice offseason.
The big shake up for Dallas Trinity this offseason has to be the exit of Head Coach Pauline MacDonald. The hiring was a headliner for the opening year of the team, though her struggle to obtain a work permit hampered her opportunity to shape the team in the preseason. According to Lloyd Hughes, writing for Squad Depth, the move may have come due to the subpar finish in year one: “Third place and a spot in the semifinals is not the level that Trinity desires considering what they believe they have with their squad and investment.” In the club’s announcement of the move, it was announced that Trinity GM Chris Petrucelli would serve as the interim head coach. The roster doesn’t show any moves as of yet and the only big news aside from the coaching change is the upcoming State Fair Clásico in October with LigaMX Femenil’s Club América.
Super League runner-up Fort Lauderdale United has been so far silent in the offseason, so sadly I’ve got nothing for fans of FTL.
League champions Tampa Bay Sun have last year’s full roster listed on the website, but given that the club just won the title, they might be letting that linger a bit. The only roster changes we do know for sure is that Erika Tymrak has retired. A reader also pointed out that English midfielder Jade Moore recently announced her retirement as well. Aside from that, let the champions relax for a bit, they earned it. It’s good to be queens.
