USL League One Rivalries: NY Cosmos vs Westchester SC
The USL League One regular season has just a few weeks left and neither NY area club are going to make it to the post season. However, Cosmos and Westchester SC had one more fixture between the two of them and photographer Nico Sirianni was there to capture the rivalry game.
With 1,310 locals in attendance, the Cosmos welcomed Westchester SC to Hinchliffe Stadium for the third and final clash between the two this season. The first two meetings were up at Westchester’s home - Cosmos won 3-2 back in May during a Prinx Tires USL Cup, group stage matchup. Then in July, Westchester exacted their revenge with a 3-0 shutout in their first ever regular season meeting.
Westchester continued their revenge tour in this match by taking a 1-0 lead late into first half stoppage time off a Blommestijn goal. Spengler scratched one back for Cosmos in the 82nd and it looked like the homeside could get a very valuable point in their attempt to not end the season dead last. McGlynn didn’t agree with that narrative and in the late late late stages of second-half stoppage he scored the winner as the visitors grabbed all three points, got on their coach, and headed home.
Neither club have managed to make it to the playoffs and with just a couple weeks left, the Cosmos still have work to do in order to avoid the dreaded Wooden Spoon. Richmond Kickers are currently at the bottom of the standings but have two home games left to get past Cosmos. Meanwhile, the Cosmos defeated the Kickers in a crucial 6-pointer, have one game in hand, and finish with a three game home run against… One Knoxville SC, Spokane Velocity FC, and Chattanooga Red Wolves. There is no guarantee of any points in that homestand.
