Super League Sync
Well Good Morning, Brooklyn FC!
Every time I think I understand what’s going on in this league, something like this happens. After an absolute soul-crushing run of form, going literally 4 months without a win and shedding one of the most qualified coaches in the league, Brooklyn FC drops four goals against Ft. Lauderdale United and gets its first win of the second half. The free fall couldn’t have stopped at a better time (I guess earlier would have been better), with BFC just about to fall out of the playoff picture. After two weird goals for each side, Brooklyn pumped in three goals in five minutes in the second half and grabbed the win. As John Howard-Fusco pointed out on this week’s Super Show podcast, those five minutes may have sunk FTL’s chances of making the playoffs. For Brooklyn, there’s only two matches left in the season and they need to win both matches, one of those is this weekend against Spokane. Circle that date!
Yes They (Spo)kan(e)!
Awful pun, I’m aware, but Spokane Zephyr are on an insane tear currently and we should all be recognizing just how good this team is, now that Ally Cook has been added up top. The UCLA forward, added to Zephyr during the midseason break, has allowed the wings to run rough-shod over their opponents. Ally has also scored four goals and added an assist of her own. Emina Ekić put in two more goals in last week’s win over Lexington SC, bringing her total to eight for the season. McKenzie Weinert has three goals of her own on the right wing. The level of connection in the offense for Spokane is scary stuff for the rest of the league, especially if they are able to complete this incredible comeback and finish in the top four. Currently, Spokane is tied with Brooklyn for the last playoff spot and they will face off this weekend. A win by Zephyr would put them in a great position to play in the first-ever Super League playoff.
Golden Boot Update
No change in the Golden Boot race, with Mia Corbin and Carolina Ascent off. She’s sitting at 12 goals atop the pack. Allie Thornton (11) (and the rest of her team) didn’t manage to score any goals against Tampa Bay Sun and lost in a shut out. Third-place Addie McCain (10) didn’t score in Ft. Lauderdale’s blow-out loss to Brooklyn. The only big movement came from Emina Ekić, who scored a brace in her club’s win. Ekić is now tied for sixth in the Golden Boot race.
This Weekend’s Matches
Well, I’ve mentioned it multiple times already, but Brooklyn’s matchup with Spokane is absolutely massive for both sides. That match on Saturday is must-watch tv. The other two matches are in and out pairings, so the playoff contenders just need to get the business done. I’m talking to you, Dallas and Tampa.
