2025 Club of the Year Nomination: Sporting CT

On the Sporting CT website, there’s a link that’s labeled “Mission” and on that page there’s a section labeled “philosophy.” That section states that the team’s philosophy is focused “on the development of the individual first, we strive to build creative, technically proficient teams where success is measured in more than victories on the field.”

And that’s all well and good. Soccer clubs say that sort of thing to hedge their bets. There’s only one champion in a season and no matter how good a team is, there’s no guarantee that your team will finish the season on top. Except, Sporting CT absolutely crushed their season in the WPSL and most definitely finished the season on top. Maybe their success SHOULD be measured by the victories on the field.

Sporting CT had a season for the ages in the WPSL. Coming into the year as a WPSL expansion side, SCT just sort of rolled, amassing win after win in the solid Northeastern conference. The season wasn’t without blemish, with a single loss to Merrimack Valley Hawks FC 3-1 in late June, but don’t let that loss fool you, Sporting got it done. The team outscored their opponents 75 to 12 from the season opener to the league championship. They averaged giving up less than a goal a match, while scoring at will against their opponents.

In the league final, the team faced the defending WPSL Champion and legacy women’s club, California Storm, but they were just another speed bump for the front-running Sporting squad. The team scored 4 unanswered goals against the champs, claiming the crown in deciding fashion. It was a playoff-capping performance that saw the club exceed their regular season excellence, scoring 19 goals against just 2 from their opponents. Absolute domination.

After winning the WPSL Championship, Tiffany Weimer, Sporting CT’s player and co-head coach, said, “To win like we did in our first year is really special. We love each other. We work for each other. It sounds cliché to say it but when you have team chemistry, all the extra tactics and technical stuff that finish it all comes together pretty easily.”

The Queens of the WPSL deserve a vote for the 2025 Protagonist Club of the Year based on an absolutely incredible season in the most established amateur women’s league in the country. They didn’t just win a title, they crushed their league and looked like champions for an entire season.
